Ideas and practical things to do to earn money as a Singer-Songwriter

1) Synch Licensing: Find music supervisors and companies that liaise with film and advertising agencies looking for music. Online ones that are good are

Pump Audio: http://pumpaudio.com/
Music dealers: http://www.musicdealers.com/

2) Songs played in shops. I have a company that I work with that gets my songs played in shops. But there are strict rules. Email me at ellie@ellielawson.com for more details.

3) Paid gigs: some venues pay but many don’t. Don’t be afraid to ask other musicians if they know of venues that pay. Swap one contact for another. Here’s one that pays:

Native Tongue EC1 is a brand new boutique live music launching in Central London.

Opening up in December 2010 with a month of showcase nights, we’re giving acts an opportunity to play to a packed venue full of fans, press, and A&Rs.

All these gigs are PAID, and will also put you in consideration for support slots for bands such as Babyshambles and The View.

If you’re an artist/band who is interested in getting one of these PAID slots, or know someone who is, please email: ollie@nativetongue.co.uk for further details.

4) Write a business plan and look for companies that fund artists such as

http://www.icebreakerfund.co.uk/about.asp

It also helps you get real about your music as a business and how you can make a living from it.

5) Session singing/playing etc. Again, ask around and network to see if there are any opportunities and get yourself to a good level so that you can do this professionally!

Hope these help!

If you have any other ideas please email me, Id love to hear from you! Ellie@ellielawson.com, also email me at my website to join my mailing list where I will be creating a group of artists where we can all swap contacts and help each other: ellielawson.com

Ellie lawson Top 10 songwriting tips!

Ellie Lawson’s 10 song writing tips:

A girl recently asked me for my advice on song writing and I sent her this so I thought Id share it with you!

1) Make/Find music/backing tracks that you like and write lyrics and melody to it. This could be any of the following:
Co-write with other artists or musicians.
Write your own instrumentals- learn to play an instrument. The basic chords needed to write a hit song are simple.
Find instrumentals by contacting producers
Write to other peoples instrumentals and use the music as a basis for a new song. With your own melody and lyrics it wont sound anything like the original- especially if it is by an artist that is totally different from you. (You will need to share the publishing though)
Find a guitarist or pianist and record chord progressions then write to them.

2) Print out the lyrics and chords of artists songs that you like and look at how they are constructed! Write the lyrics out for a more intense study

3) Write your own versions of songs you like as practice. Re-write the lyrics to a melody you like or re write the melody to lyrics you like.

4) Free write about any subject about matters that are important to you then pick out all the good lines and ideas and make a song. Also freestyle sing, wail, rap, anything and record it and if any good melodies and lyrics jump out use them to start writing a song. I do this a lot.

5) The chorus and the hook of the song is really important so keep notes of good ideas or think about new versions of existing song titles

6 Speak with your own voice and work at it. The more you sing with your own voice and lyrics the more confident and comfortable you will become with your singing identity and persona.

7) Write loads and remember 1 in 10 songs will be great- if you are lucky. I once read that you have to write 100 songs to get 1 mega hit!

Take a day or more if you can with no distractions to write and really get it to it. record yourself on a 4 track or garage band if you can. Find a good way of recording and filing your ideas to go back to later.

9) Pick a genre and get really good at that. Stick with it. So if its the Adele-blues /uk/pop genre, really look at her inspirations and then their inspirations and only listen to things that make you go ‘wow’ as there is so much music out there!

10) I think Songwriting can be quite prophetic! My advice would be to remember to write about things that you want more of in your life (not things that you don’t want more of!) as this makes songwriting a really positive experience. You will be singing lyrics over and over again, so try to write positive ones as well as ones about bad things! However, It can be therapeutic to write about things that aren’t right, and i try and turn the bad things around by writing songs a lot to find solutions to mine and the worlds problems as well as for fun!

Understand Your Brain To Use Visualisation

love this information… straight of the press of leading success guru entrepreneur John Assaraf..

http://www.johnassaraf.com/change-your-brain-change-your-mind/understand-your-brain-to-use-visualization/

Let’s take a look at what happens in our brain when we visualize the future. There are two parts of our brain—the conscious and the subconscious. The conscious part of the brain is the part we are aware of; the conscious brain focuses on one thing at a time, whatever we think is important at the moment.
The subconscious brain doesn’t think this way. The subconscious brain sees a complete picture of everything happening all at once. The subconscious mind is aware of the input from all of your senses at every moment.

Your conscious brain…

  • The amount of information your conscious brain processes is about one-half of the one-millionth of one percent of the amount your subconscious brain processes.
  • For all its brilliance, the conscious brain has a major weakness—follow through.
  • The conscious brain is great at imagining things and thinking them through, but it’s next to useless when it comes to actually getting things done.
  • Your conscious brain is amazing at coming up with ideas, but useless when it comes to carrying them out because it is easily distracted. The average person changes focus every six to 10 seconds.
  • Goal-setting is something your conscious brain can do.

Your subconscious brain…

  • The subconscious brain can remember billions of things in perfect sequence, not only for minutes at a time, but for your lifetime. How often does it get distracted? Never.
  • Goal-attaining is something only your subconscious can do.

So, let me ask you, which part of your brain would want to trust and deliver on your dreams? The power is in your subconscious brain.

  1. Write any script you want and play that film out in your imagination. Your subconscious will watch it play out and think it’s real. The subconscious mind is a captive audience for the movies we play in our head.
  2. Realize a mere thought causes measurable biological changes—a scary movie can cause our hearts to race while a different image can evoke biological cues telling your body to relax.
  3. Combine the stories you are crafting about yourself with powerful emotions. A good story evokes powerful mental images and those images can create an emotional response that is stronger than what is really happening in our lives.
  4. Visualize your ideal life to reshape your perception of reality, and once that happens, reality conforms to that perception.

How effectively you are able to move an idea from your conscious (imagination) to your subconscious (belief/action) will determine your success. Visualization is the key to making this happen, because your subconscious mind doesn’t know that what you are visualizing is only in your imagination. Your life script visualized and acted upon can change the course of your life.

Ellie’s top 10 tips to success in the music industry

Having just been at the brilliant Music Connex event for 3 days and sitting on the panel for ‘Routes to Market: Major vs Indie’ I thought I’d re-post this! Hope you get something from it! x

Ellie’s top 10 tips to success in the music industry

1) THE RIGHT PEOPLE

Get experienced, established and respected people involved in the business side of your music. When I was starting out 1) didnt know I was able to. 2) I didnt know the power of this. But its really important that you get your music to passionate business people with clout who can make things happen for you. Give your manager 6 months-a year to prove themselves. If you have a manager that’s just started out but they have the right attitude thats fine, but make sure they are associating themselves with successful music business people, or find a successful lawyer that likes your music and wants to get involved. Many lawyers want to work with new and up and coming acts and will do it at a much lower cost or even for free until you get some success.

2) BE PRO ACTIVE AND TRY ALL ANGLES

Be pro active and try all angles to get your music heard by the right people that can help you. The hardest thing is getting to the top people, the gate keepers but if you do it in the right angle (IE: MAKING THEM AWARE OF YOU IN A UNIQUE WAY) it will feel natural for everyone involved. The only way to succeed is to try different things and try lots of them.
Look for names on the internet, look for people that sit on BBC/mercury music awards panels, read music business magazines in the library, email people, myspace people, look in the back of your favourite CD artwork for names and write and ask them for help, local competitions, etc.

3) REJECTION

Accept that you will get rejection but know that the perfect people to help you are out there for you. You just have to find them. For every 50 people maybe only 1 will be of help. And they are never the ones you assume will be. Thats why you have to enjoy interacting with people or find someone on your behalf that enjoys doing that for you- ie a manager. But even if you do have a manager there is a lot that you can do yourself as well.

4) ALWAYS BE PREPARED FOR A GREAT OPPORTUNITY

Be prepared for opportunities when they come along. Because opportunities are there all the time for the taking. Record your music the best you can and keep striving to make it better and carry it on you, carry flyers, do regular gigs and have a 30 second story about what is unique about what you do and where things are for you at the moment.

5) DONT BE SCARED TO MOVE ON IF IT ISNT WORKING

If something isnt working after about 12 months don’t be scared to move on. Have a clause in your management deal that says after 12 months if you havent got a deal of sorts or made a certain amount of profit you can be free to move on or re do the deal. If it is a really big manager you may want to stay longer. But my golden rule is that although things take time to come together if nothing is happening after a year, you are not working in harmony and you are not happy try something else.

6) DO WHATEVER IT TAKES

I have had a lot of part time jobs to make the music work for me and have sacrificed the ‘company car’ and prospects of success in a different type of career. It is hard to have 2 full blown careers on the go like it is impossible to have 2 serious lovers in your life! If music is your passion, focus on your strengths, on everything linked with the music world and make it work.

7) CHOOSE A DIRECTION AND FOCUS

Be focused and choose a direction for each album/EP you do and refine what it is you are doing so its easy to describe, sell and talk about. Decide that you will focus on this for 1 or 2 years and then move onto the next thing which will be different. Its good to have time boundaries and not get stuck too long doing the same thing. Give your self goals for your chosen direction and zone into the people that work in that genre.

GET THE BALANCE RIGHT

Get the right balance between making music and promoting your self. I think it should be 50/50. Crafting a song is as important as finding the right fan’s, manager, label or sponsor.

9) WORK ON ALL SIDES OF BEING AN ARTIST.

Song writing, live side, promo, image, blogs, story, learning an instrument, vocals. just do a little bit towards each thing and it will all come together. Get advice and opinions from people but think for yourself and decide if you are getting enough love back from what you are putting out there and how much you are enjoying it.

10) THINK BIG

Think big, dream big and and remember that you can make things happen by thinking outside the box. Read self help books to keep positive like Napoleon Hills Keys to Success which is about sticking to your dreams and working in harmony with people. Also, another one that I would highly recommend is called ‘The Answer’ which is about visualising what you want, doing positive affirmations and planning .
